摘要
Chronic diseases are persistent health conditions that affect a large number of patients worldwide and have serious implications on the health status of patients, representing a global challenge from both a medical and an economic point of view. Thus, rapid and accurate diagnosis, as well as disease monitoring, represent key steps in the optimal management in clinical practice. In an attempt to achieve these important objectives, several methods and devices have been developed to detect biomarkers from biological samples. Biomarkers, through their unique advantages, such as presence in various biological fluids, specificity, and change in their concentration with therapeutic interventions, are of particular importance for the biomedical field. In this regard, the use of multiplexed sensing devices capable of simultaneously detecting several biomarkers, based on electrochemical (bio)sensors ensures outstanding sensitivity, high specificity even in complex biological matrices, a reduced analysis time, and an essential possibility of decentralized testing, including at the patient's bedside. This multiplex detection provides sufficient information necessary to achieve an overall image of the patient's condition as well as the stage of the disease, this being valuable information for correct therapy and for an accurate prognosis. This review highlights the biomarkers associated with the most frequent chronic diseases and provides a critical perspective on the electrochemical multiplex devices used for their detection in biological samples, emphasizing their design, detection methods, advantages, and applicability in current and future medical practice.
