ALTHOUGH laboratory workers have known for decades that tumor incidence in animals can be affected by nutritional manipulation,1 the possibility that diet may be important in the cause and prevention of cancer in human beings has received major attention only recently. Since knowledge in this area is developing rapidly, we will outline processes by which hypotheses relating dietary factors to cancer are formulated and tested.
