Central polydactyly—A review of 12 cases and their surgical treatment

Twelve patients with central polydactyly of the index, long, or ring fingers are reviewed. Surgical reconstruction of a five-digit hand was carried out in 10 patients. Review after an average of 40 months' follow-up showed that from both a functional and cosmetic viewpoint the results were unsatisfactory. Despite these findings all parents were satisfied with the five-digit hand because it corresponds with cultural and religious norms of Japanese society.
