High-entropy coating is no doubt one of the most important research field in high-entropy materials. This article is to provide an overview of preparation methods and properties for HEA-based coatings with some general considerations for their design and applications. We first briefly introduced the basic concepts and history of HEA-based coatings. Conventional methods of atomistic deposition and particulate deposition used for HEA-based coatings are also introduced. The outstanding performance of HEA-based coatings in different aspects for structural materials and functional materials are exampled. This demonstrates that the wide range of composition design could bring many innovative opportunities.
