Recent Clinical Advances in Rare Gastrointestinal Tumors

Adenocarcinomas and neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix are increasing in incidence. Histology of appendiceal cancers should be verified at a center with a larger volume and expertise. NGS reveals distinctions between appendiceal cancer subtypes, particularly goblet cell carcinoma, and colorectal cancer. Clinical trials of cytoreductive surgery/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy or pressurized intraperitoneal chemotherapy are underway and may result in improved treatment options.
