Abstract MnO 2 materials were facilely prepared via the rapid redox reactions of KMnO 4 and H 2 O 2 in acidic medium, which exhibit the significant improvement of catalytic activity in the degradation of gaseous toluene compared to commercial MnO 2 . It was found that the molar ratio of H 2 O 2 /KMnO 4 has a great influence on the crystalline phase, morphology and average oxidation state of the as‐prepared MnO 2 . The 3‐MnO 2 sample prepared by using three equivalents of stoichiometric H 2 O 2 displays the best catalytic activity for the total combustion of toluene (concentration is up to 1000 ppm) at 300 o C. The mechanism of the influence of different H 2 O 2 addition amount has also been discussed by catalytic performance and nature of materials.
