It introduces the analysis of the Facebook page Uruguayan Memes for Young Citizens (UMFYC), which shows the particular ways in which teen participants and their followers on the page engage with global and local issues, and how such engagement locates young participants within particular tensions and struggles in their communities. The chapter discusses the implications that these kinds of participation may have for broader political dynamics and democratic cultures in Latin American societies. The research on the interactions within this meme page shows that humor, irony, and parody have become privileged resources to channel critique and discontent with social and political issues, and also to assert a playful identity that allows for recognition in the peer group.
