This chapter provides a comprehensive update on the science and application underlying the
effects of music in exercise and sport. Recent theoretical advances are briefly discussed, and relevant
literature is critically appraised. The first half of the chapter leads towards the presentation of a
new theoretical model that draws on the latest empirical evidence and provides an impetus for
future research and evidence-based practice. To aid practitioners, an instrument is presented that
can be used to assess the motivational qualities of music in exercise and sport: the Brunel Music
Rating Inventory-3. The chapter is peppered with examples of how music can be applied in
exercise and sport contexts using a scientific approach.
