The U.S. President’s Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

President Biden's Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence, published on October 30, 2023, is remarkable for its breadth, detail, and timeliness. However, it is directional and aspirational rather than definitive given the many uncertainties and difficulties associated with crafting wise policy with respect to generative artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, it will provide valuable guidance to the thousands of government officials who must craft specific rules, guidelines, and regulations. An executive order can be quickly reversed by a new incumbent, and Congress, the courts, and even international actors will undoubtedly help shape U.S. policy in this rapidly developing area of technology.
