Trace amounts of oxygen stimulate facultative anaerobic bacteria (FAB) within anaerobic bioreactors, which was shown to correlate with enhanced methane production from long-chain fatty acids. The relationship between FAB and fatty acid-degrading syntrophic communities under micro-aerobic conditions is still unclear.
