Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique that has been used over the years in both academia and industry for structural and compositional analysis. FTIR spectroscopy is a useful tool for functional group identification and quantification. Among different methods for characterization of layered double hydroxides (LDH) and organo-modified LDH, FTIR is a promising and fast method and it is usually the initial step for LDH characterization. It is possible to identify the LDH structures and intercalated anions between the LDH layers with the help of FTIR technique. In this chapter the FTIR absorption bands of LDHs, organo-modified LDHs, and some of its common organo-modifiers are summarized. LDH with different types of anions, LDH with different metals, and LDH with different types of organo-modifiers are classified and the most important absorption bands are introduced. This chapter will increase the accessibility of researchers around the globe for characterization of LDH and its organo-modified structure with FTIR.
