Development of the Face

The building blocks of the face consist of a number of tissue masses – the unpaired frontonasal process and the paired maxillary and mandibular processes. Internally, the expanding palatal shelves ultimately separate the nasal cavity from the oral cavity. Much of later facial developments are accomplished by differential growth of individual components. Many common facial malformations are based on incomplete development of early facial building blocks.
