Oxygen 1s x-ray-absorption spectra of the ${\mathrm{BaPb}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Bi}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ system have been measured. The spectra do not show the prepeak structures common in the doped copper oxide superconductors. The observed shift of the first peak is much smaller than predicted by single-particle density-of-states calculations.
