摘要
The environmentally benign conversion of alcohols to valuable intermediates is a key technology for a sustainable society. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis can be a green process for alcohol conversion. However, studies on PEM electrolysis of primary alcohols are limited, and its general comprehension is unclear. In this study, PEM electrolysis of 1-propanol (1-PrOH) was studied. The water concentration in the electrolysis solution had a significant influence on the products. The electrolysis of pure 1-PrOH predominantly produced 1,1-dipropoxypropane (DPP), while the electrolysis of aqueous 1-PrOH produced propionaldehyde. The formation of DPP is the non-electrochemical acetalization reaction of 1-PrOH and electrochemically-formed propionaldehyde, where Nafion in the PEM electrolysis system served as the acid catalyst for the acetalization. Furthermore, the acetalization reactions for C1, C2, and C3 alcohols were examined. PEM electrolysis behavior of 1-PrOH was clarified, and then the effect of the carbon chain length of the alcohols on the electrolysis behavior was also discussed.
