Eccrine sweat gland (ESG) is a skin appendage that plays an important role in thermoregulation. Gross histology classified the tissue into the coil part and the duct part. Histological studies subdivided the coil part into dark, clear, and myoepithelial cells and the duct part into luminal and basal cells. Previous attempts to characterize the expression pattern of ESG cells relied heavily on immunohistological staining. However, immunohistological staining studies bear problems. The cellular classification, as inferred by histology and immunohistological staining, may overlook latent cellular states.
