In 2019, Atherosclerosis started a two-step review process to further improve the journal's quality. All submissions are seen, judged, and discussed by the editor-in-chief and the co-editors in a weekly telephone conference. As a result, more than 60% of all submissions are rejected upfront. The remaining articles are transferred to the associate editors, who invite expert reviewers. Including revision, these pre-selected submissions have approximately a 50% chance of being accepted. With this revised review process, the acceptance rate of Atherosclerosis has decreased from more than 30% to less than 20%. We put in place these new procedures to ensure that only the best quality papers are published in our journal.
