ChatGPT-4o for English language teaching and learning: Features, applications, and future prospects

摘要
The recent launch of ChatGPT-4o by OpenAI has attracted considerable attention. This new version of ChatGPT offers a unique technological tool that will definitely have a profound impact on the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). As artificial intelligence has transformed education and other fields, the advent of ChatGPT-4o is poised to lead to further transformation. Drawing on secondary data, particularly those about older versions of ChatGPT, as the literature on ChatGPT-4o is yet to be available, this article aims to discuss the role that ChatGPT-4o plays in English language teaching and learning. The article is divided into three main parts, focusing on (a) key features of ChatGPT-4o for ELT, (b) potential applications of ChatGPT-4o in ELT, and (c) future prospects and ethical considerations on ChatGPT-4o. The article concludes with some implications for ELT, particularly for English teachers. It also offers suggestions for future research.
