Objective: To investigate the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive cohort, and analyze the baseline characteristics in Handan rural area, China. Method: A cohort of 6830 people in Handan rural area, Hebei province, China was investigated for the morbidity of hypertension with the cross-sectional method. The ECG-LVH (electrocardiogram diagnosed left ventricular hypertrophy) was screened by Cornell voltage-duration product and/or Sokolow-Lyon voltage index. The baseline characteristics was evaluated for the general status, MMSE, cardiovascular situations, Ophthalmological criteria, indice about life quality, atherosclarotic risk factors,et al. The laboratory indice would be measured,as well. Results: 1.The prevalence of hypertension in this area is 45.10%, rising with age. 2. We find 829 ECG-LVH. The prevalence is 12.18%. There are statistical difference between people with non-diabetic retinopathy and controllers (P = 0.023 and 0.014,respectively),while no relationship found between ECG- LVH and retinopathy. When evaluating the atherosclerotic risk factors, there is statistical difference between systolic blood pressure, cholesterol and uric acid (P < 0.05). 3. In the group with hypertension, there are statistical difference with controllers in uric acid. While using Sokolow-Lyon voltage index, there are difference in creatinine and microalbumiuria, as well (P < 0.05). Conclusion: 1. The prevalence of hypertension in this area is 45.10%, rising with age. 2. Retinopathy might appear earlier than cardiac damages. 3. Systolic blood pressure, cholesterol and uric acid might have relationship with ECG-LVH, eve without hypertension. 4. LVH might occur before or with hypertension.
